04.10.06 Beautiful Weekend

There are few things better than biking slowly around greenlake on a late Sunday afternoon whilst listening to Al Green. Very few. The weather is getting much better and it bodes to distract me from the hustle. But I'm figuring out a work system where I get outside for at least an hour a day to do biking.

04.10.06 A Truly Bizarre Experience

The Infernal Noise Brigade is disbanding. I know this because I went to their last show over the weekend. What I didn't realize was that a pair of films preceded their performance. We went to the Northwest film forum on Capitol Hill and had to sit through Mansex Agitprop, some very disturbing hardcore gay pornography masquerading as an art film, and the third installment of a trilogy documenting the Chilean revolution. Part three was a riveting biopic of socialists struggling to persevere in spite of the right wing's attempts to sabotage Salvador Allende's government.

I fell asleep twice.

But after that, yes- it was the INB's beautiful strains of slavic funeral marches mixed with the odd Johnny Cash cover.

So there you have it- gay rape, communism, and the end of an era for the anarchistic marching band genre.

Though I apologize for not updating this section of the website as frequently, I do hope that the current resurgence of main archive DotPs is making up for it.

The emerald city comic con was held this weekend at Qwest field in always sunny Seattle, WA. But I was there on business- Handing out minicomics can be alot of work, and I was spent by the time I had rid myself of the 300 DotP books. I met some nice people, including, but not limited to:

Jim Mahfood of 40oz comics
Keith Knight of K Chronicles
Jason of comic strip
the folks of geek like me
and comixpress

Wow. An update. Awesome. Sorry I've been so lax in doing this comic once a week, but work has begun anew on the next syndicate submission, and that has a chance, however small, of actually feeding me someday. So you know where my priorities are.

A confession: I have not yet been to Portland. I hear great things about all the debauchery, Dandy Warhols and Suicide girls parties down there, but I'm in no rush to check it out. The time will come soon enough.

Holy hell. I'm sure you've seen it by now, but the Sasquatch lineup is fucking amazing. I was contemplating going to Coachella, but this is much, much better.

02.13.06

Yes, I know the above comic has nothing to do with Seattle. yes, I am ok with that.

Fuck it. We're not doing a superbowl reaction comic. You've already heard all there is to hear, anyway. I apologize for the absence; I've been very busy doing freelance work and updating my comic.

Though I did get the chance to see Duncan Sheik at the Triple Door on Saturday night. Felt rather strange, being one of the youngest people in such a swank dinnerclub atmosphere. Everyone one else in the room had mortgages, I'm sure.

02.07.06

Oh shit. We lost. A graphic reaction is forthcoming.

In the meantime, check out some artwork I did over the weekend. On Friday night I went and saw the Infernal Noise Brigade at a club called the Lo-Fi Downtown. It was my first time seeing the group and I gotta say, I was impressed. Their voltron-like combination of a brazillian drumming troupe and Slavic Funeral procession blew me away.

I'm not very often a dancer, and that night I decided to get some sketching done from the balcony. Below are the finished pieces, click on them for greater detail:

A view from above the dancefloor:

The DJ's "table" (note the wicked sampler on the ironing board):

And a cartoony image of the DJ himself:

I originally meant to do a comic about Norm stating that he had just moved to Seattle right before their title run. Consequently, he was a good luck talisman and would auction himself off to the highest bidding city, whose team would then go to the next superbowl.

Then I would've tried to get Cleveland as the butt of the joke in there somewhere. Whatever the case, I like this version better.

01.19.06

Who's ready for the big game? Seattle doesn't exactly have a football pedigree, but that's going to change come Sunday. A tip to anyone planning that trip to Detroit already- bring body armor. And I quote Dr. Dre: "Invest in something to protect your head and neck." Not a very nice place, but come to think of it, the whole state of Michigan isn't very welcoming.

01.16.06

After raining 27 straight days out here on the left coast, our little attempt at breaking the record of 33 has come to an end. Just pretend you didn't know that when you read the comic.

01.14.06

So the Hawks beat Washington yesterday to advance to the NFC Championship game. Next weekend promises to be quite insane. Good thing I've got my straitjacket.

01.11.06

Welcome to the Fremont Polo Club

I know some freaks who, every saturday, gather together for some high class lawnsporting events. Here are some pictures from a particularly wet morning. Normally we have many more participants; but apparently there were some casualties from the drink.

So I went to the microsoft christmas party on Saturday night, complete with white necktie and cheesy faux Yves Saint Laurent glasses. Like a complete Kanye West Jackass impersonation. On the whole it was a dour affair, as Benaroya Hall packed with Young urban professionals who had little more to discuss with their peers than than the next software ship date.

I'm not sure how Seattle feels about microsoft, or if they really care that much. Maybe it's just another giant transnational corporation nestled in the community? As a newcomer, it does feel weird to know that Amazon headquarters is downtown, The first starbucks is very close to where Norm gets assaulted in today's comic, and Eddie Bauer, REI and others are all homegrown. What do we have from Wisconsin? Besides the requisite beer and cheese, the only thing that springs to mind is our distinguished list of serial killers.

12.01.05

I got an email from the Seattle Public Library today. Seems that I need to renew my books by the 5th if I don't want to get an overdue charge. Call me a simpleton, but I think the fact I can get an automated reminder like that simply amazing. Or to quote Paul Wall off Late Registration: "It was immaculate. It was simply amazing."

The latest books I checked out are "The Time Machine," by H.G. Wells (cos I never read it in its entirety) and "Porno," the sequel to Trainspotting, by Irvine Welsh. I'm slowly getting into it, but it's nowhere near as good as his other work, "The acid house" being my favorite.

11.30.05

A friend mentioned that I should've had Pete drinking coffee, "not a glass of water or whatever pansy bullshit they drink in the midwest." Right you are, sir.

So we didn't get any snow. Big surprise. Apparently there's another chance later in the week. But I'm not holding my breath.

11.29.05

I'm going to change that image in the top right corner. Maybe to a giant coffee mug. We'll see. In other, more important news, we're supposed to get some snow o'er the night. Up to three inches. I don't believe we will, but it sure would be fun to see the entire city shutdown. Maybe I'm only thinking that because my work is a 15 minute walk from my house. Or maybe I'm just an asshole.

11.28.05

Ok, so I'm trying to do something different with my blog. In addition to constant ranting, I'll be posting a new comic about Seattle here every Monday. And as I'm still relatively new to the Northwest, having just moved here in August, We should have lots to talk about.

First thing: why I moved to the Emerald City.

As a recent college grad from Madison, Wisconsin, Seattle might not seem like the first place to relocate to after school, but I have a number of reasons.

1) I'm from Northwest Wisconsin. We small town folk who manage to escape our incubation podunk have a powerful fear of ever returning to it. That's why we strive to get the furthest away as we possibly can.

2) The career I'm trying to pursue is not a locality based endeavor. Ergo, I'm free to move across the country at my leisure.

3) Seattle reminds me of Liberty City in Grand Theft Auto 3.

I won't overwhelm you all with personal bullshit in the future. I've got alot to talk about: What's the best park outside the city? Why so damn many coffee shops? Why is it so hard to meet people here?
