Pete’s tale begins with his hair. I’d been trying to create a distinct look for one of my main characters, and his hair slowly grew until I thought I was happy with it. Then it grew even more. His third incarnation has a whiteboy ‘fro complete with lambchop sideburns. It got to the point that his head wouldn’t completely fit into a comic panel and he needed a haircut. I completed the process by adding some straight, angular dimensions to supplement his straight-guy personality. Of additional note is the eye development clearly apparent in this series. I started with a full circle and some strange eyebrow line, abandoned that idea but kept the full circle, then eventually switched to where I am now, with a half-moon design.

| Intelligent Design: Norman McNeil |

 |
|
| Norm began as a manifestation of all the controlled substances I've ever ingested, and his design clearly reflects that he's the wilder of the my two lead characters. He's gone through many different developments with his hairstyle, and even went through a distinct Cartman phase (note the hat). Early on, my style consisted of using emotive eyebrows that were friggin huge. I abandoned that technique to be able to make his hair more stylistic; I had previously used photoshop gradients to color it. This past year I've moved back to strict pen and ink but perhaps a move to something else in the future. Also, Norm was fat. He's not so much anymore... merely big-boned. |

I introduced Yuki much later when I was more comfortable and had an established style. Her first hairstyle still looks great to me now, though I found it to be too boring to draw. It took me ages to perfect her style in the second image, but then I felt her hair barrette wasn’t fitting (though still very attractive). So she lost it, and gravity eventually took over as a lock of hair fell down across her face. Coloring Yuki’s hair with photoshop eventually led to refining it further and going back to pen and ink.

| Intelligent Design: Julian Andrews: |

| As you can see, Julian hasn't changed that much over the course of time. Part of that has to do with the fact he was the last character introduced, and I made sure his style was cemented before I committed him to the page. |
